Cameron University has added a new cybersecurity concentration to its computer science program, a move administrators say responds directly to demand from both traditional students in Lawton and military-affiliated learners connected to nearby Fort Sill.
The new coursework covers network security, digital forensics, and systems administration, taught by a mix of computer science faculty and adjunct instructors with backgrounds in information technology. University officials say the concentration was shaped in part by conversations with regional employers, including defense contractors and support businesses that serve Fort Sill, who described a persistent need for entry-level cybersecurity talent that didn't require relocating candidates from outside the region.
Serving a Military-Adjacent Student Population
Lawton's proximity to Fort Sill means Cameron's student body includes a substantial number of active-duty service members, veterans, and military spouses, many of whom are looking for degree programs that translate cleanly into civilian career paths after their service commitments end. Cybersecurity has become a popular landing spot for veterans who developed relevant technical skills during their military service and want a credential that formalizes that experience for civilian employers.
Cameron's program is structured to accommodate the scheduling realities of military life, with a mix of in-person and online sections designed for students who may be balancing coursework with deployments, training exercises, or a spouse's reassignment. Academic advisors say flexibility, more than any single feature of the curriculum, has been the deciding factor for many military-affiliated students choosing between Cameron and out-of-state online programs.
Building Toward Regional Employer Needs
Beyond the military community, university officials point to a wider regional need for cybersecurity skills among small and mid-sized employers who don't have the budget to compete with national tech firms for talent, but still need someone who can manage basic network security and respond to routine digital threats. Cameron is positioning the new concentration as a practical, regionally grounded alternative to more theoretical computer science tracks.
The university plans to build out internship partnerships with area employers as the first cohort of students moves through the concentration, though those partnerships are still in early stages. For now, administrators describe the cybersecurity track as a bet that Lawton's unique mix of military and civilian employers will keep producing demand for graduates who understand both worlds, without requiring students to leave southern Oklahoma to find that kind of work.
